Science Fiction & Fantasy books

Enter worlds beyond imagination.
The useful divide here is not simply science fiction versus fantasy. Decide how much world building you want, whether romance should lead or support the plot, how dark the pressure should feel, and whether you want one complete journey or a long series. The sections below offer clear entry points without flattening every speculative book into the same experience.

Choose by Mood & Commitment

For a lower commitment science fiction choice, Project Hail Mary is a verified standalone. Starborn opens a wider sequence. The Faith of Beasts is The Captive's War Book 2 and should follow The Mercy of Gods. In fantasy romance, Fourth Wing, A Court of Thorns and Roses and A Forbidden Alchemy are verified first books in their respective series. At the other end of the scale, The Strength of the Few is a direct second volume and A Parade of Horribles is Dungeon Crawler Carl Book 8. Start with their earlier books if you want the relationships, rules and consequences to land fully.

Science Fiction

Choose Project Hail Mary for technical problem solving and cross species communication, Starborn for a lost colony mystery that opens into a wider arc, or The Faith of Beasts for later series space opera about empire, adaptation and resistance. The difference is less about “hard” versus “soft” labels than about what carries the tension: experiment, hidden civilisation or political survival.

Epic Fantasy

This Kingdom Will Not Kill Me suits readers who want a modern sensibility colliding with a dangerous fantasy realm. Runebreaker moves toward darker magic and romantic tension. The Strength of the Few is for readers already continuing the Hierarchy quartet; it is Book 2, not an entry point.

Romantasy

Start with Fourth Wing for dragons, military trials and immediate survival pressure. Choose A Court of Thorns and Roses for faerie bargains and a longer court centred arc, or A Forbidden Alchemy for a romance shaped by labour, class and rebellion. All three begin series; none should be presented as a promise that the full emotional or political story closes in one volume.

LitRPG & Game Worlds

Dungeon Crawler Carl is the correct entry point for Carl, Princess Donut and the dungeon’s brutal entertainment system. A Parade of Horribles is Book 8 and assumes the accumulated alliances, rules and consequences of the earlier floors. Choose this route if explicit mechanics, escalating systems and dark comedy are part of the appeal.

Cozy or Historical Fantasy

For bookish impossibility and hidden history, try The Astral Library. Agnes Aubert's Mystical Cat Shelter offers a cozier magical setting, while The Violin Maker's Secret links an object, mystery and the past. Cozy atmosphere can lower the narrative temperature, but it is not a universal content warning.
